2 blocks from the Courthouse. Yes, the Korean taco craze may be close to hitting its peak, but trendy dining options are not typically what you think of when you stroll through Marietta square. Little did Scott Kinsey know, the ex-Hooters chef who opened the first Tsunami in Buckhead in 2011, when he chose an unassuming corner spot on South Park Square for the second installment of his east-meets-west-meets-tortilla operation. Now, putting aside the fact that carne asada/kimchee tacos seem to be everywhere you look, Tsunami is by no means an imitator but a serious contender in the genre. Fun, made-for-sharing appetizers include empanada bites, avocado cilantro egg rolls and made-to-order guacamole. The 13 taco offerings feature a variety of pairings including short ribs smothered in a Kogi bbq sauce, Vietnamese style pork topped with Asian slaw and cilantro, chili rubbed Mahi with a hoisin lime aioli and Bulgogi (Korean marinated steak) with shitakes and soy-sesame vinaigrette. Special mention goes to a flavorful marinated tofu with shitakes and shredded lettuce that is certainly not just for vegetarians. In addition to things in tortillas, there are a handful of salads (including a chilled noodle salad), rice bowls (try the All-American Bowl with grilled steak and shitakes over rice topped with a fried egg) and quesadillas. The Tsunami could stop right there and be just fine but they had to throw in a slew of $2 sides like jalapeno cheese tots and perfectly prepared yucca fries as well as an irresistible S’mores egg roll. The simple but sleek dining room resembles nothing of the old Le Peep diner that occupied this space for years and the hip young staff swiftly moves the courthouse crowd in and out even when the place is packed (which is almost every day).
