.6 miles from the Courthouse. Mama Louise’s humble little meat-and-three on Forsyth Street is by far the most famous restaurant in Macon. So famous that even Oprah paid a visit to the place in 2007. Opened in 1959 by Inez Hill (“Mama Hill’), and later co-owned by Mama Louise, the restaurant has become an iconic Macon landmark and is beloved by locals, tourists, and celebrities alike. The Allman Brothers got so hooked on Mama Louise’s cooking that they even brought her on the road with them for several of their tours. There is even a brick that has been placed in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame walkway, declaring Mama Louise the “Mother of Southern Rock.” As for the food, expect a daily changing menu of meats and veggies—their famous fried chicken and collards are always available. Depending on the day, you can also expect to see fried pork chops, roast beef or smothered chicken with a rotation of sides such as limas, okra, macaroni and cheese, squash and blackeye peas. For dessert, they have sweet potato pie and bread pudding every day and then rotate in banana pudding and several cobblers depending on the day. Can’t make it for lunch? Then got on down here early for breakfast. Every morning, they’re serving eggs, biscuits and grits alongside your choice of bacon, ham, sausage and more. H&H is a part of Southern culinary history and shouldn’t be missed whether you are on your way in or out of the courthouse.
