3 blocks from the Courthouse. Mark Allen and Neville Steel opened this truly authentic down-under bakery in 2001 and have cultivated a loyal following stretching from Marietta square all the way up the east coast.  While the bakery ships their famous meat pies to Aussie and New Zealand ex-pats all over the country (even to the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C.), we have the luxury of walking just 3 short blocks to get them straight out of the oven.  The meat pies (that’s what they’re officially called) are a self contained puff pastry similar to a pot pie filled with the traditional ground beef and gravy.  Authentic variations consist of meat paired with either cheese, onions, mushrooms, or beef kidney.  For those yearning for something more familiar to us Southerners, you can also try their bbq chicken or chicken vegetable pies in addition to their breakfast pies filled with eggs, bacon, ham or sausage.  Other traditional offerings include a multitude of Australian loaves and rolls that have cheese, bacon or even the famous Vegemite spread baked into the crust. At lunchtime, several sandwich options are available all served on bakery fresh rolls.  Two worth noting are the turkey with cranberry sauce and the roast beef with their homemade tomato chutney.  To complete the Aussie experience, grab an authentic jam tart, Anzac biscuit, or the Pavlova (Australia’s national dessert).  A quick in and out and right in the square makes this an easy but adventurous lunchtime option.
